Sustainability Victoria publishes outcomes of Climate Change research

Sustainability Victoria’s research into peoples’ attitudes toward Climate Change showed that:

• Nearly 80% of Victorians believe that human activity has contributed to climate change and they are concerned about the impact it is having now and into the future.
• For young Victorians, over half of them rate it in the top two issues facing their generation.
• The key issues nominated by people in the survey reflected where they live.  Rural Victorians are most concerned by drought and bushfires; in Melbourne, air pollution and drought, and; coastal Victorian’s by erosion.

The research was conducted to inform actions that can be taken by Government, Business and the Community to meet the Victorian target of net zero emissions by 2050.

As the research showed, participants are fairly supportive of actions that reduce energy consumption that don’t cost or in fact save money, such as reducing energy use or car use or purchasing energy efficient appliances. A smaller group of Victorians are prepared to take further actions such as purchasing green power or installing solar panels.
